Apple Controls the Whole Stack
Apple designs the hardware, the chip, and the operating system together. macOS is built specifically for Apple’s own silicon like Apple M1 and Apple M2. Windows laptops don’t have that advantage. Windows 11 has to run on everything from budget machines to high-end workstations, across dozens of manufacturers. That flexibility comes at a cost. Power efficiency takes a hit.
Apple Efficiency
Back in 2021, Apple switched from Intel to chips to their own, similar to what they have used in iPhone and iPad. These chips are designed to do more work using less power. Think of it like this:
- Older Intel laptops behave like big engines that burn through fuel
- Apple Silicon behaves more like a hybrid system
Same tasks, less energy wasted.That’s why MacBooks can idle for hours without draining much battery, while many PCs slowly lose charge doing what looks like nothing.
Less Background Noise
macOS is strict about what runs in the background. Fewer unnecessary processes, fewer surprise battery drains. On a typical Windows laptop, it’s not unusual to find:
- Manufacturer utilities running constantly
- Update services doing their thing at the worst possible time
- Random software you didn’t even realise was installed
All of that quietly eats into battery life.
The Reality Check: Batteries Wear Out
Here’s the part marketing doesn’t like to mention. Even the best battery degrades. After about 3 to 5 years, you’ll likely notice:
- Battery draining faster than it used to
- Sudden drops in percentage
- The laptop shutting down earlier than expected
- And worse, the battery may start to swell and damage your laptop
That’s normal. Lithium-ion batteries don’t last forever. They wear out with charge cycles, heat, and time.
Replace the Battery, Not the Laptop
A lot of people assume the whole laptop is finished at that point. In reality, it’s often just the battery. If the machine is otherwise working fine, replacing the battery can easily extend the laptop lifespan by a few more years and save you from buying a new laptop. It’s one of the simplest upgrades that actually makes a noticeable difference.
