In a nutshell…
The malware is called VPNFilter and believed to originate in Russia. Funny, I’m from there as well! The hackers infected many consumer and business grade routers to sniff passwords, monitor your communication, and even brick devices.
The confirmed router models that have definitely been hacked are
- Linksys E1200
- Linksys E2500
- Linksys WRVS4400N
- Netgear DGN2200
- Netgear R6400
- Netgear R7000
- Netgear R8000
- Netgear WNR1000
- Netgear WNR2000
- QNAP TS251
- QNAP TS439 Pro
- TP-Link R600VPN
However, if your router isn’t on the list (these aren’t very common in New Zealand), it might get infected later… nobody knows if and when
It’s strongly recommended that you at least restart your router. This will avoid the further infection spread, as it happens in several steps. To completely destroy it, you must reset the router to factory settings. You can find the instructions in the manual, Google them, or just call your Internet provider.
Resetting the router is usually harmless but it may reset your WiFi network name and password to default. Don’t worry, it usually would be on a sticker in the back anyway. If that happens, you’ll probably need to reconnect all your laptops, phones, tablets and wireless printers to your WiFi network but that’s easy too. If you do get problems, give us a call.
Also, you might use this as an opportunity to upgrade your wireless network. If you struggle with slow WiFi speeds or poor coverage inside your house, we can replace your router to give you consistent connection anywhere you wish.
