Obsolete and junk used computers

Used Computers Pitfalls

Used computers are not the same as refurbished. A used system is sold as is, while a refurbished one is tested, upgraded, and backed by warranty. Always ask why a used computer is being sold before you buy.

Facebook Marketplace and eBay are full of used computers. Sometimes you might get a good deal, but more often the experience leads to disappointment. As Benjamin Franklin once said, “The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.”

Many sellers just want to get rid of their junk. The computer could be slow, have strange faults, or even show signs of water damage. Can you be sure they are telling you the full story? If you are a DIY enthusiast, buying a used computer might feel like a fun project, but for most people it quickly becomes a headache.

Most used computers come with hidden problems. A low price can be tempting, yet the money and time spent on repairs often outweigh the savings. And forget about warranty. If the machine fails a month later, you have no protection and no support to fall back on.

The Difference Between Used and Refurbished Computers

Refurbished computers are not the same as used. You get the reliability of a new computer for less than half the cost!

At Fix My Laptop Brisbane we stock a range of refurbished laptops and desktops ready for their next home. Many come from trade-ins or from businesses upgrading their systems. Some are even ex-government computers, and in most cases they have seen very little use.

Every refurbished computer is tested extensively before sale. We replace worn or failing parts to ensure reliability. Hard drives are often the first component to fail, so we upgrade them to SSDs (Solid State Drives). This simple upgrade makes the computers run several times faster. Keyboards and batteries are also replaced when required.

Once hardware checks are complete, we move on to cleaning and a thorough burn-in test. If the system passes, we reinstall the operating system, either Windows 10 or macOS, depending on the device. Drivers, updates, and essential software are preloaded so the computer is ready to go the moment you turn it on.

Benefits of Refurbished Computers

Buying a refurbished computers is a smart choice and offers an excellent return on your investment

Refurbished computers often cost around half the price of comparable new models. Instead of buying a low-end new computer, you can choose a faster and more reliable refurbished desktop or laptop.

Choosing refurbished is also good for the environment. Rather than adding to landfills with e-waste, we recover and upgrade what is worth saving. This reduces the demand for new manufacturing, packaging materials, and transport. Each refurbished purchase helps cut down on unnecessary waste, and even if the impact feels small, it makes a real difference over time.

Every refurbished desktop or laptop comes with a full one-year warranty, giving you the same peace of mind you would expect from a retail store purchase.

How Much Do Refurbished Laptops Cost

We carry about a dozen or so laptops in our inventory. The stock changes weekly but this is what you could expect…

Cheap laptops are good for browsing, office work, and everyday home use. Prices usually range from $400 to $700. Anything new under $1000 is often poor quality, so it is best to avoid those options. You can also read more about Why Cheap Laptops Aren’t Worth Your Money.

Mid-range laptops handle multitasking, heavy browsing with many tabs open, streaming, and light gaming. Expect to pay between $700 and $1200 for this category.

High-end laptops are ideal for professionals, designers, and anyone who needs strong performance for creative work. Prices start from $1200. We do not usually recommend gaming laptops, and we do not keep them in stock, but we can order one for you if required.

How About Desktops?

Most people nowadays prefer laptops, but we still carry a few desktops just in case you are looking for a family computer, or not planning to travel a lot.

Cheap home or office desktops are available from $350 to $600. They are often faster than brand-new models from major retailers, which usually start at $800 and still rely on slow mechanical hard drives.

Mid-range home or office desktops start from $600 and go up to $1000. In most cases, these systems will perform better than new computers priced at $1200.

We do not stock gaming desktops, as the technology changes too quickly. However, Fix My Laptop Brisbane can build a custom gaming desktop to suit your needs.
