What You Should Do ASAP!

We’ll walk you through what to do so a small spill does not turn into a big problem.

Turn off your laptop immediately.
If water spills on your laptop keyboard or screen, shut it down straight away. Unplug the charger first, then press and hold the power button for at least five seconds until it switches off. Leaving a wet laptop powered on can cause short circuits and serious damage.

Stay safe when unplugging.
If your hands or clothes are wet, don’t pull the plug straight from the wall. There’s a risk of electric shock. Instead, switch off the outlet or the circuit breaker before disconnecting your laptop.

Remove the battery if possible.
On older laptops, the battery can be removed with ease. Newer models often require disassembly. If you’re not confident doing this yourself, it’s best to call a technician.

Dry and drain your laptop.
Use a microfiber cloth to blot away excess liquid from the keyboard, vents, trackpad, and ports. Place the laptop upside down on a towel and leave it to drain for at least 24 hours. Avoid using rice, which can get stuck inside, and don’t use high heat like hair dryers, as this can cause further damage.

The Next Steps

If you are lucky, we might be able to save your laptop. Acting quickly after a spill gives us the best chance to repair the damage and recover your files.

If you act quickly, we may be able to save your laptop and reduce the risk of costly repairs. In many cases, the battery and keyboard will need replacing. When liquid reaches the screen, watermarks often appear as well.

The safest step is to back up your data. Even if the laptop will not power on, recovery is often possible. A water damaged laptop might work again for a while, but it is unlikely to stay reliable in the long term.

If you spill liquids such as coffee, beer, or wine, the outlook is worse. Repairs can be more expensive than the device itself, so replacement is often the better option.

We can prepare an insurance report for you. With this, you may be able to make a claim under your contents insurance policy.
