Windows Update Problems

Blog - Windows updates are important

We’ve all seen it before. You power on your computer and get stuck staring at the “Working on Updates” screen. Sometimes it finishes in minutes, other times it drags on for hours. Updates are meant to run smoothly once a month, but if yours takes too long or fails completely, something isn’t right. That’s when Fix My Laptop Brisbane can help.

Updates add security patches, driver fixes, and features that improve Windows or macOS. They’re meant to keep your computer stable and secure.

Cumulative updates arrive once a month. Microsoft releases what it calls a “quality update” on the second Tuesday, often referred to as Patch Tuesday. These larger updates include important security fixes along with bug patches. Apple, on the other hand, does not follow a set release schedule.

Out-of-band updates appear when there is an urgent need. Instead of waiting for the next Patch Tuesday, Microsoft sometimes issues these updates to deal with critical security risks. They are less common but usually essential when they do arrive.

Feature updates come less often, usually every six to twelve months. These are bigger releases that add new functions and design changes. For example, Windows 11 23H2 rolled out at the end of 2023, while Apple introduced MacOS Sonoma in the same period.

Typically, updates install automatically without problems. Small patches only take a few minutes, while larger revisions may need up to an hour. If your updates drag on much longer, it usually signals an error.

After installing recent updates, your computer might get stuck in a boot loop. You may see error messages on the screen telling you that Windows or macOS is undoing the changes.

In many cases, undoing those changes also fails, leaving you with a broken computer. To prevent this, we always recommend making regular backups, especially before major updates.

If your system is already stuck, creating a backup is often still possible and that’s the first step we take. From there, the cause of the failed update needs to be identified. It could be a lack of storage space, a failing hard drive or SSD, or sometimes just a temporary bug that several restarts can resolve. Bring your computer to us and we’ll work out the solution.
